Government with Powerful Women
Women empowerment has been increasing steadily over the past three decades. Transformations in society occurred aimed at giving the female gender power that will increase their social economic and political status, with access to necessities such as human rights, nutritional improvements and basic health and education. This social awareness destroyed the age-old concept of a subordinate woman, reaching across the race, class, age and ethnic background of women across the globe. Today, gender does not depict only women or a loss of man, but refers to both man and woman, and to their status, relative to each other. Gender equality today refers to the stage of social development where the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of an individual will not depend upon being a man or a woman, but when they realize their full potential or capability.
Political Empowerment of Women
Political empowerment of women refers to the representation of a woman in a government structure as part of a decision-making body, both formal and informal, their voice being heard and accepted as part of the general decision that will affect their respective societies. According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, “a world average of only 15.6% of women is present in combined houses of parliament”. Despite being poorly represented in the lower levels of a government, women are still in the highest level of decision-making.
However, the absence of women from the basic structures of government means that national, regional and local priorities (how resources are allocated) are being defined without input from women. A woman’s empathic tendencies might provide a different outlook on the needs and concerns of a community, from a hard-lined outlook of a man.
Political Life of a Woman and Their Participation in Politics
The political life of a woman and their participation in politics plays a crucial role in the process of the advancement of women. A simple demand for justice or democracy can be considered as a requisite for women’s views to be taken into account. Without the participation of women and the assimilation of women’s views in all levels of decision-making, important goals such as equality, development and peace will be difficult to achieve.
One reason for this is the violent and destructive nature of a man who would prefer to jump into battle than initiate peaceful negotiations with the enemy. Inclusion of women into vital roles in the government strengthens the democratic basis, efficiency and quality of a government, be it national or local. If a local government aims to provide the needs of both man and woman, it should also build on the experiences of both gender, equally representing them in all levels and fields of decision-making, covering responsibilities in local governments.
Leveling Off of Women’s Presence Among State-wide Elective Officials
Although women have made progress as time passes by in increasing their presence in the state government, a recent leveling off of women’s presence among state-wide elective officials and state legislators remains a mystery, while some consider it as a troubling development. At a minimum, leveling-off is evidence that more will be coming in the future, and there are no machinations working to help women seek government posts or to be elected into office during each election.

Consequences of Kosovo’s Independence
Context Of Kosovo
Social and political conflicts are a major source of instability in the world today. They affect not just the countries in which they occur, but very often engulf their neighbors and have a potential to throw entire regions into turmoil. Even if settlements are reached, they often remain unstable resulting in a return to violence or necessitating ongoing intervention by the international community. Tragically, Kosovo may be such a case. But the potential for the success of peace processes can be greatly increased when all sections of society are provided with opportunities to become active partners in their own peace process.
Nature Of The Problem Of Kosovo
There could be little doubt that the independence declaration of Kosovo has created a new situation, and a new crisis in the region, with implications much wider than the province’s borders. It is even clearer that, unless realism prevails on this crisis could only worsen or, at best, fester for a long time, with a good chance that it would periodically result in episodes of violence. The problem is that realism and solutions based on it are never pain less, even more so when the parties in conflict start from different premises, even if the y are both mistaken.
Implications Of Kosovo’s Independence
The recognition appears often in the official declarations of states, which have recognized Kosovo as the end of a process of dissolution of the former Yugoslav federation, a happy ending of the period of ethnic cleansing and promise of a brighter future. In most related declarations, the responsible officials are making a bet for a harmonious cohabitation between all ethnic groups which, finally reconciled, will start their integration in the Euro-Atlantic family.
Prospects As To The Future Of Kosovo
The “Kosovo case” will remain open for a number of years, perhaps decades, first due to problems of legality and legitimacy, and second due to concrete empirical situation in the field: none of
these factors play in favor of a realization of Kosovo as an independent state. The first one because of the serious endangerment of the international legal and political order, the second because of the fact that Kosovo in the long run will look like a non-functional entity as an international protectorate, which
furthermore has a “de facto” divided institutional functioning between the Serbian and the Albanian communities. These factors, however, do not mean that the “Kosovo case” will be archived as a difficult and painful case, for which there are not enough facts or “enough witnesses” (the idea of a frozen conflict). To the contrary – it should be expected that the question of Kosovo in the upcoming period remains in the heart of interest of not only Serbia and the Balkans, but also of the United States, Europe, Russia and other countries around the world.
Value Of Kosovo
Kosovo has some of Europe’s richest reserves in coal, but also in lead, zinc and lignite. The Trepca mine has some 7.5 million tons of mineral reserves, while Kosovo also has silver, gold, nickel, bauxite and manganese. According to a World Bank report, the richness of the Kosovo resources could amount to 13 billion dollars.

The Elusive Peace in Kashmir
For many years now, Kashmir had been known to be a dangerous place to live in due to conflicts surrounding the region, making peace so elusive among its people. The conflict, however, does not stem from the country itself like other conflict-ridden countries, but from its neighbors such as Pakistan and India. Both countries are considered as nuclear powers in conflict with one another in such a small space, always threaten the Kashmir region.
The unresolved conflict
Since the partition of India and Pakistan happened more than 60 years ago, Kashmir had been the root cause for conflicts as to who should claim this tiny country into their own. A total of three wars had been fought over this nation and its people with no clear victor to claim this war-torn area. As years pass by, technology and availability of weapon increases, that would make the next war catastrophic. The unresolved conflict of the region also divided the population and without conclusion of the conflict, the people of Kashmir face an uncertain future. This place was once a beautiful nation with a growing tourist industry, but now, the beauty was turned into destructive terrorist activities and military incursions.
Kashmir’s Dispute
Kashmir’s dispute stemmed from the separation of two British Indian Empire states into independent states, which turned into the Muslim Pakistan and the Hindu India. The Partition, as referred to by other historians, started due to religious indifference and the threat of annihilation. Muslims in India believed that their religious status will be overwhelmed in a Hindi Indian controlled state, thus, the Muslim League, demanded that Hindu and Muslim India should be separated. The Indian National Congress, which would later become the ruling party of India, rejected the proposal of the Muslim Indians but compromised by creating Pakistan.
Unknown to all at that time, the leaders of the ruling party expected that Pakistan will eventually collapse due to on-going turmoil. However, Pakistan rose to become an independent and aggressive nation. The process of Partition left traumatic memories on both sides due to the killings on the boarders of the two countries, leaving hundreds of thousands dead and millions of families homeless. With such animosity towards each other, it is impossible to see a resolution through peaceful means.
Hope Of A Peaceful Settlement
According to the U.N., hope of a peaceful settlement between the two warring states is still viable; however, long term solutions for peace should be implemented for peace to last in Kashmir. The United Nation’s influence, experience in mediation, and its numerous member states makes it the ideal mediator on this conflict. This organization of countries has served roles such as administrative, executor and solution for political conflicts that cater to the continuation of global peace.
With a peacekeeping force under its helm, it has immersed itself in the international settlement of conflicts. With activities such as rouge military movements, holding of elections, hosting human rights conventions and helping refugees, the United Nations mandate on the solution of the peace process will ensure a long term effect to both parties. Kashmir does hope that this governing body has the ability to pacify hostilities and ensure an effective conflict resolution.

The Impact of Media in Conflicts
Conflicts can be defined as a prolonged armed struggle, a serious disagreement or simply a difference between principles and opinions. Up to this day, it is still present in every facet of society; whether it is between family members, a group of individuals or an entire nation, conflict occurs indiscriminately. Conflict is also known to have a balancing effect and is capable of affecting the status quo of a situation or environment. However, it should be noted that, it does not balance the powers and create equilibrium, but rather it seeks the balance to the powers. Simply put, it is the process of balancing powers with the result of instilling the victor of the conflict as the supreme power. Thus, to be able to understand the current holder of the power, it is crucial to comprehend prior conflict and the reasons behind it.
Media Understands Its Role And Effect
Before covering a particular conflict, it is crucial that media understand its role and effect, be it directly or indirectly, on it. During this process, the media can work something out that can lead to peace while covering the story and events. They could serve as a venue for communication between conflicting parties while remaining fair to the issue, resulting to be a mediator to both parties. The ideal effect of media being a mediator is acquiring a peaceful resolution by allowing both parties in opposition to open a dialogue with each other. This mediator role of the media is critical in the conflicts occurring today, since no other branch of society can perform this important role in a conflict as media.
Effective Agent Of Peace
For media to become an effective agent of peace, several doctrines must be followed, such as responsibility, impartiality and accuracy while covering the events of a conflict. When an absence of objective reporting occurs, media can increase the tension in a particular conflict and, sometimes, escalating the conflict. Today, in the era known as the Information Age, misinformation reported by the media can immediately create a response, be it negative or positive, depending on the structure of the message and how it was reported.
These days, media concentrate on operating in societies where the freedom of information and expression have not been fully institutionalized yet. Their work becomes a challenge during conflicts in these societies, especially if the state itself is involved. Without transparency and an effective information dissemination mechanism, the objectivity of media gets compromised. As bits and pieces of information are being supplied to them by interest groups and the state itself, media can be an unwitting pawn in the conflict.
Analyze A Conflict
To overcome these difficulties, media men should be able to analyze a conflict objectively and the facts being presented by the conflicting parties. Upon understanding the implicit and explicit cause of the conflict and the persons involved, they can present demands that will lead to peace. Conflict analysis is necessary to establish an objective reason in a conflict. This can be a venue for conflicting parties to take steps to negotiate peaceful settlements in on-going disputes and to reduce hostilities that affect the population.

Military Leaks in the Modern Times
In the age of computers, the Internet, extensive use of mobile phones and other portable advanced communications devices, keeping secrets is an ever-growing challenge. This is the case as well with armed services around the world. Their ability to serve as a potent defense of a state as well as their capacity to wage war heavily depends on information. To be effective they must have more, if not equal, information than the enemy. Moreover, the enemy as much as possible should have the least information about them. This has become perhaps the most urgent issue faced by armed services globally.
Lack of absence of security
The lack of or total absence of security opens the modern state to attack. Attacks do not need to be conventional. It could be indirect through proliferation of information. Imagine terrorists gaining access to the restricted information of the military or the industrial secrets of a state’s economy, which they could use these to directly assault the state or undermine its stability. Due to the growing avenue for distribution of information, restricting its circulation has become difficult, especially information of a classified nature.
Information age warfare
Warfare in the ages of human history has been determined primarily by the technology of the time. In the 21st century, which is known as the information age, information is the foremost weapon. Therefore, the access to information would be the main concern of the military and the prime target of the enemy.
Information is the lifeblood of modern society. It is the main component in socialization, and the institutions that deal with it are the new power structures of the polity. In recent news, the military institutions in the US are preparing to deal with the anticipated release of restricted documents on the war in Iraq by Wikileaks website. The main point of this is that it best manifests the working of the kind of warfare of this age.
Security issues
The structure of society, the culture of openness, and the institutionalization of information dissemination make keeping information difficult. More so if such information is to be kept secret from enemies of the state. The adversaries of a country would try to gain access and possession of this secret information in any way they can. Before, they used to employ spies to gain this knowledge. Now there exists the internet. It can be a means to gain access to these restricted pieces of information.
On the political side, there is a growing movement demanding greater disclosure on the part of the military in terms of its operations and activities. Perhaps the public has the right to know but this right will be catered to at the expense of national security. This is the kind of usual yet undesirable trade-off that would exist. In fact, countries expend much effort and resources dealing with leaks and the consequence they have on a country’s security.

Fast but Unhealthy Food

This photo was taken on December 6, 2008 in The Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas, NV, US, using a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi.
First coined in 1915, the term “consumerism” has not reverted to its original purpose – “advocacy of the rights and interests of consumers” (Oxford English Dictionary). After fifty years it has come to mean, ” the emphasis on or preoccupation with the acquisition of consumer goods” (Oxford English Dictionary). What consumerism came to mean in 1960 stretches to the 21st century. There seems to be a manufacturing industry that caters to every demand of society. Things, including food, are believed inexhaustible and their production, fast. Fast-food establishments abound, are patronized, and so are a profitable enterprise.
Fast Food Nature
Fast food products involve processes that use preservatives to augment their flavor and shelf-life. These preservatives, when taken in amounts hazardous to the human body, cause health problems. Recently, a study was made on the meat product of a global fast-food chain. The meat lasted, unaltered and unspoiled, for several months. The study’s result denotes high amounts of preservatives in fast-food, countless of which are sold, served, and eaten globally. The 21st century is steeped in a culture of fast-food.
Health and Fast Foods
While the health aware recognizes the dangers in alcohol drinking and cigarette-smoking, it has yet to unveil the long-term impact on health of fast-food products. Since the media inculcates fast-food products’ desirability and edibility more than it informs society of food’s most basic and important quality, which is nutritional value, Health-consciousness movements must make their efforts to inform society of the real deal fast-foods take out on them, more felt and mainstream.
Role of Government
Current food safety standards do not consider fast-food products blatantly dangerous. Reality shows fast-foods are no different from alcoholic drinks and tobacco products. This has to change. Warnings about fast-food items’ health risks ought to be better publicized. The government must streamline, into modern culture, the measures it has taken to counter health risks from fast-food products.

Death Penalty in the U.S. Context
Thirty-eight states have the death penalty in their law books. Illinois have a moratorium regarding the practice of the capital punishment, enacted by former governor George Ryan. Former President George W. Bush, who had been a governor of Texas, presided over a total of 153 executions, making his state the leader in carrying out the death penalty. The Supreme Court, in 1972, declared the death penalty to be unconstitutional and emptied the death rows all over the country, but when each state re-drafted their laws, capital punishment was once again re-instituted in 1976.
Death Penalty of Mentally Retarded and Juvenile
In June 2002, the court declared that sentencing of mentally retarded persons to death as unconstitutional. In the summer of 2009, the court ordered that the authority to impose the death penalty should be carried out by the juries, not the judges. In January this year, the court refused to review the constitutionality of sentencing juvenile offenders to death. As of the moment, there are 80 or more juvenile offenders sentenced to capital punishment, including one who was allowed to represent himself in court while he was only 16 years old.
Gender Bias Of The Capital Punishment
The gender bias of the capital punishment, as well as it’s racial and class bias, is considered as the savior of the lives of women. The problem lies in the reason for saving their lives. Prosecution regard women as docile, less threatening but unstable when it comes to emotions. A woman killing or maiming a person is seen as results of loyalty or blind love for a man. This supports the notion about the weakness of a woman and how they are in need of guidance, protection and control from a man.
This denies them of any moral or social responsibility over the control of their actions, making it easier to marginalize women. This double-standard on gender has raised protests from condemned men, anti-death penalty groups and feminists with an argument that, “that gender, just as race and wealth, should play no role in determining who lives and who dies in the nation’s death chambers”. However, this argument means nothing if it will be compared to racial bias as a reason to remove the death penalty.
Gender Bias Promotes Stereotype
Even if more women will be given the capital punishment and executed as fast as their gender counterpart, it will not make this form of punishment as fair or less barbaric. While gender bias promotes a stereotype of a female being the victim and male always becomes the protector, it still encourages hope that prosecution, judges and juries will put fairness in the law and human compassion before the desire to kill legally. That should be the case, whether the accused sentenced to die is a man or a woman, a child or an adult, regardless of color or race.

Suffering With a Chronic Illness
What is chronic illness? It is an illness that lasts for a really long time. It is not easily cured by a simple surgery or by medicine. What makes this illness more difficult to bear is not the sick part of it but how long one must suffer with it. Not only does the patient suffer but it’s effects are felt by the whole family. Chronic illness can leave the patient feeling depressed and full of anxiety and when your family members are close to you they will share some of the same feelings.
Chronic illness challenges
Each member will handle the affects in a different way but if they can better understand how chronic illness generally affect people they can meet the challenges more prepared for the specific situation they are facing. Another thing to remember is that there are others who are not family members such as workmates, friends, schoolmates and neighbors than can help in providing much needed and comforting support.
Adjustments needed for help with chronic illness
When one does have a chronic illness there will be a lot of changes. Some will feel much the same way while others are radically different and unfamiliar. Depending on the illness it might impact the normal routine in family affairs and adjustments will need to be made to make it easier to deal with. Also, maybe the therapy that is given for relief of symptoms may cause further discomfort.
Chronic illness and it’s effects
Depression can sometimes set in due to these changes and some schedules will even need to be adjusted to accommodate what the sufferer can and cannot do and even what days would be better. Often times the patient will become more dependent on family for the emotional support and assistance.
It is good to realized that and understand that each family member may need to care for the patient and will have to adjust their emotions, attitudes and lifestyle accordingly. Happily this can be done and as time goes on the situation might not be as bad as it first appeared or begun. Knowing that others have experienced some of the same things and can offer some tips and what helped them can be very helpful.
Is Criticism Hard For You to Take?
Most of us have now and then have been criticized. There are a number of reasons that can bring this on. Sometimes a person may do it to put themselves in a better light by pointing out something about you to take the focus off of themselves. However, for the most part criticism comes from a person who cares about you. Perhaps a husband says something about your cooking; your wife said you should wear a different tie with that suit; a friend said something about your child. Or maybe it comes in a more correctional manner like from a boss or a parent if you are a child.
How Do You Respond to Criticism?
No matter the case, how did you respond to the criticism? Did you take offense and become agitated or did you accept it as constructive criticism? It can be hard to accept as sometimes our first reaction is to tell them it is none of their business or even get angry. Still, others may lose their self confidence and become downhearted and feel they don’t do anything right.
You may hate it when someone criticizes you but that is a normal way to feel. You can learn to accept criticism without overreacting by working on some ways that may help to lessen the impact of criticism’s effect it can have on you. It may not completely remove it but we can better learn to give the benefit of the doubt and try to understand why someone is giving their opinion. Others can see things about ourselves that we cannot.
Do We Criticize Ourselves?
We may be very critical of ourselves so when we hear something negative we become overly sensitive to it. We need to learn to be reasonable when criticizing our shortcomings. Noting what they say may help us to work on what they brought out. If the one pointing out something about you is upset try to calm them down as this disarms them and opens the way to better communication. Remember that how we react to criticism can help us when we deliver it as well.
