Alzheimer’s Disease
15th Annual Memory Walk
Last September 25, the national and annual Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk was held in the different communities of Columbia, California, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio and other US states. It is one of the biggest events in the country wherein participants register to join the cause of the organization. Each year, the memory walk plays a significant mark in every community to increase the awareness of the people and raise funds for further study of the disease. It is also their goal to assist the affected families in their struggles and eventually find the cure for the illness. It is a huge concern of the society since based on the recent 2010 study highlighted by the Alzheimer Association, there are 5.3 million Americans affected by the disease and the seventh leading cause of death among the elderly.
Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a common form of dementia, which disrupts activities of daily life as well as damages the reasoning abilities and thinking skills of elderly. It is an incurable, degenerative, and fatal disorder. World Health Organization and Alzheimer Association released basic information on the early, late and warning signs of the disorder. One of the earliest signs of the illness is inability to acquire new memories. The late symptoms are confusion, irritability and aggression, mood swings, language breakdown, long-term memory loss, and the general withdrawal of the patient as their senses decline.
There are ten warning signs of the illness. These include memory loss (usually dates, persons and events), difficulty in solving problems and planning, sudden change in schedules at work and home, confusion with time and place, trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships, new problems with words in speaking and writing, misplacing things and inability to retrace steps, decreased or poor judgment, withdrawal from work or social activities and alterations in mood or personality.
Alzheimer Association
Alzheimer Association is the leading voluntary health organization supporting communities on increasing information dissemination on the causes and effects of the disease among elderly. Their vision is a world without Alzheimer’s disease. The group also encourages more communities, families and individuals to partake in their vision, goals and objectives. They create nationwide multi-facet linkages in promoting advancement and further researches on the treatment, causative factors and preventive measures on the disorder.
They provide specific health referrals and support care systems and groups for the early diagnosis and detection of Alzheimer’s disease. They may be called health advocators, which constantly notify the public on the importance of brain health and total body wellness. The annual memory walk and updated educational strategies are only few of their continuous innovations of the group to accurately, deliberately and efficiently maintain their stand against the degenerative disease.
Community Effort On Alzheimer’s Disease
Hundreds of concerned American citizens unite annually in various communities to adhere to Alzheimer Association’s vision. In this memory walk, thousands of dollars are donated and fund raising programs are supported and created for the affected individual, families and society. Fighting the disease is a collective and community effort; it needs gradual, regular and stable support structure to sustain its purpose.
